John Legend Surprises Students At Kennedy Center
RTT News
Printer-Friendly Format

(RTTNews) - John Legend gave a student choir from Duke Ellington School of the Arts a surprise when he turned up at the choir's rehearsals at Kennedy Center.

The R&B crooner arrived at their rehearsal unannounced and asked students "Can I play with you?" before he took to the piano and joined them in their rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On." The students then sang along with Legend, with seventeen-year-old choir member India Reynolds saying: "If 'What's Going On' came out yesterday, it still would have been a hit."

Legend was launching the Center's "What's Going On . . . Now" project, in which high school students are asked to submit art to highlight the social issues they feel affect their generation. Legend said of the project: "Not only are we reviving this beautiful piece of art, but we're making it alive for young people and hopefully giving them a message for their community."

Legend will be playing two concerts at the Kennedy Center on May 3 and 4 as part of the initiative, where he will be joined by the National Symphony Orchestra and Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings.
